About the GPA Calculator

GPA weights each course grade by how many credit hours it carries, so a five-credit course counts more than a two-credit one. Add a row for each course to get your weighted average on the standard 4.0 scale.

Formula

GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits), where A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0.

Frequently Asked Questions

An unweighted GPA treats every course equally on a 4.0 scale. A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses such as AP or honours classes, sometimes allowing a result above 4.0.
Include every course from every semester in one calculation. Averaging semester GPAs directly is wrong unless each semester carried exactly the same number of credits.
Usually yes — an F contributes zero grade points but its credit hours still appear in the denominator, which is why a single failure pulls the average down sharply.
Around 3.0 is generally considered solid, 3.5 and above is strong, and 3.7 or higher is typically competitive for graduate admissions. Expectations vary considerably by institution and field.
