About the BMI Calculator
Body mass index is a simple screening measure that relates weight to height. It does not measure body fat directly, but it is widely used as a quick indicator of whether weight sits in a healthy range for a given height.
Formula
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². The World Health Organization classifies the result as underweight below 18.5, normal 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9, and obese at 30 and above.
Frequently Asked Questions
The WHO defines 18.5 to 24.9 as the normal range for adults. Below 18.5 is classed as underweight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight, and 30 or above as obese.
No. BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so it overestimates body fat in athletes and can underestimate it in older adults who have lost muscle. It is a population-level screening tool, not a diagnosis.
Not in the same way. Children and teenagers are assessed against age- and sex-specific percentile charts rather than the fixed adult thresholds, because healthy body composition changes throughout growth.
Treat it as a prompt to look further, not a verdict. Waist circumference, body composition, blood pressure and blood markers all say more about health than BMI alone. A clinician can interpret it in context.
