About the Average Calculator
"Average" can mean several different things. This calculator returns all of them at once — the mean, the median, the mode and the range — so you can see which best describes your data.
Formula
Mean = sum ÷ count. Median = the middle value once sorted, or the mean of the two middle values for an even count. Mode = the most frequently occurring value. Range = maximum − minimum.
Frequently Asked Questions
When the data contains outliers or is heavily skewed. One extreme salary drags a mean upwards, while the median stays representative of a typical value — which is why income is usually reported as a median.
Yes. If two values tie for most frequent, the set is bimodal and both are reported. If every value appears exactly once, there is no mode at all.
It measures total spread from lowest to highest. It is simple but fragile — a single extreme value changes it completely, which is why standard deviation is usually preferred for describing dispersion.
